Often repetitive, overuse injuries can be caused by a lack of flexibility. Whether it’s work or recreation, when participating in these types of activities it would be wise to take the time to stretch the muscles being used. Some common muscle groups that should be stretched regularly, regardless of activity, are the hamstrings (which can contribute to back or knee pain when tight), and the calf muscles (which can cause foot pain). A good way to start is with a warm up; just a few minutes of light activity to get the blood flowing. Now you’re ready to stretch. To properly stretch a muscle you will want to maintain a position that is comfortable but yet you feel the tissue stretching. I usually recommend holding the stretch for 20 seconds and repeating it about 3 to 4 times for each part you are stretching.
